Hale Keaka, Lānaʻi Theater

Description by Aryanna Medriano
Have you seen the latest movie in town?  Well, I love our Lānaʻi Theater.  They have buttery popcorn, plump juicy hot dogs, and sweet refreshing slushies.

First as I walk into the theater I immediately smell the buttery popcorn.  It makes me hungry when I smell it.

Then I see the plump juicy hot dogs roasting on the machine.  The hot dogs spin slowly while it is roasting.

Finally, the theater gives out slushy flavors that are sweet.  I really love the cotton candy flavor because it’s so sweet.

I love the Lānaʻi Theater’s buttery popcorn, plump juicy hotdogs, and sweet slushies.  The Lānaʻi Theater is the best place ever.

History by Rosalina Sunio-Membrado
The Lānaʻi Theater has been popular for almost 100 years.

James Burbage built the Theater with his brother-in-law.  They made a super big theater.

The theater was built in January 31, 1926.  It closed in the 1970s.

Afterwards in 1993 it became a playhouse and a community fitness center.

The Lānaʻi Theater has been remodeled.  It now shows two good movies a week and is the most popular place on Lānaʻi that I know.

Interview with Collin TamashiroIMG_9151

The person who I interviewed is Collin Tamashiro.  He told me a lot of interesting things.

He said that he use to do everything.  He sold tickets, ran the projector and cleaned.  The first name of the theater was just “theater”.  Mr. Tamashiro worked there for five years.

There was a stage in front of the theater.  On the corner of the screen was a signal for Mr. Tamashiro to change the reels.

At least 20 people had to come to the show or Mrs. Tamashiro would not play the movie.  The most popular movies were Kung Fu films.  When Bruce Lee’s movie came out all 350 seats were filled and Mr. Tamashiro had to turn people away.  He had to run the movie for two nights.   The second most popular movie was Blue Hawaiʻi.

All the movies had to be picked up in Honolulu.  Mr. Tamashiro would fly there and carry as many as 6 reels per movie back to Lānaʻi.  Each reel weighed about  50 or 60 lbs.

I got a lot of information from Collin Tamashiro.

The Lānaʻi Theater is the best place to watch movies.

The popcorn is delicious.  It is super buttery.  I always eat the popcorn every time I go there.  I love the popcorn at the theater.

The seats are very relaxing.  As I sit on the chairs they go back and forth.  I really love to sit on the chairs as I watch movies.

The movies at the theater are great to watch.  My favorite movie that I watched there was Goosebumps.  It is a great movie.

I am looking forward to watching the next movie at the Lānaʻi Theater.
