Canoes Lānaʻi

Description by Brieann Belista
I love the restaurant Canoes.  Its name reminds me of how I want to be on a canoe in the ocean.  The outside has a lot of plants and the building is my favorite color, red.  I like the chicken.  It is my favorite because it is crunchy.  I love the “Sunny-D” drink they serve.  It’s very tasty, I always want to drink more.  Canoes restaurant is so amazing.

History by Kaydence Ozoa
Canoes restaurant has an interesting history.  It wasn’t always the same.

Canoes restaurant was built around 1926.  It used to be an ice cream shop called Endo’s Lānaʻi Fountain.

It became Tanigawa’s in 1951.  It’s now operated as Canoes, Lānaʻi restaurant.  It’s famous for its hamburgers.

I learned so much about Canoes restaurant!

Interview with Business Owner, Stephen Ferguson by Brieann BelistaIMG_8859
I interviewed Stephen Ferguson.  I call him “Uncle Fergie.”  Canoes opened in December 2002.  Canoes used to be called “Tanigawa’s” and it has always been a restaurant.

Canoes has a 75 year old hamburger recipe.  Mr. Tanigawa’s son gave the hamburger recipe to Uncle Fergie.  I would like to taste the hamburger.

Another thing Uncle Fergie told me about is that the Canoes’ sign actually has a picture.  The blue parts by the picture is a canoe and the green part is a tree.  People barely notice that.  The building is named Canoes because he got the idea for the restaurant while sitting with his friend under a coconut tree after paddling canoe.

Uncle Fergie told us so much about Canoes.  I like learning more about Canoes.

Description by Kaydence Ozoa
I have sweet memories of going to canoes with my family and friends.  I like doing cartwheels and backbends on the grass in front.  I love ordering Miki Bucket.  It is like a musubi but it is a triangle and it has something in the middle of it.  I also like when my Aunty Raven works there.  She gives me free food and juice.  I love Canoes.  I can do whatever I want.
